PUEBLO BONITO developer under fire, again

By David Flores

The local chapter of a national association called Mexico United for its The old lighthouse of Cabo San Lucas.Beaches has sent an ultimatum to developer Ernesto Coppel, owner of the Pueblo Bonito resort chain. The group is demanding that Coppel open access to the old lighthouse in Cabo San Lucas and the beach in front of it, which is smack in the middle of Coppel’s newest development, Quivira. He is resisting.

The old lighthouse, a national historic monument, which is slightly over 100 years old, was deteriorating badly when Coppel acquired the land around it and blocked the public access. Coppel claims he will refurbish the lighthouse and convert it into a maritime museum. The law on this is pretty clear. The beach belongs to the people of Mexico. The fact that he can get away with closing the public beach speaks volumes about who runs this state.
